The Air Jordan 9 was the only model in the entire Air Jordan line that was released when Michael Jordan wasn’t bludgeoning other teams for the Chicago Bulls.
It was the only lucky child in the Air Jordan family to have received the full, undistracted attention of Michael Jordan. Chicago Bulls must have felt jealous, but lucky for the fans, the Air Jordan series reached a new high with the release of this all-flexible Jordan 9.
Designed by the same genius, Tinker Hatfield, the Air Jordan 9 was different (and cleaner). The outsole carried beautiful symbols and inscriptions in foreign languages, including Japanese, Chinese, and others.
The upper of the shoe was cleaner and the molded lace loop running all the way to the bottom, which the previous models had sloughed off, came back in a better, even more comfortable design. On the heel was embroidered the number 23. Now, not all the pairs have the same number. Obviously, the player editions had different (and their own) numbers on them, and if you were lucky, you’d get your hands on a special release with a different number.
Nike released the Air Jordan 9 in four different colorways. A “non-traditional” Olive colorway was released later.
And finally in 2002, they released the Air Jordan 9 retro and ran it for a full year, and then in 2008, the Air Jordan 9 retro came back packaged with the Jordan 14 retro in a “Countdown Pack”.
Many more retros were released later on, and Jordan 9 remains one of the most favorite models of the Air Jordan series.
$190 is the price the fans happily pay for the marvel.
